Doing Business in Maine
Infrastructure:Infrastructure:
From telecommunications to trucking and fiber optics to freight rail, Maine is ready to move you, your information, your products, and your customers quickly, safely, and efficiently. Maine's communications and transportation systems are among the nation's finest. Both are dependable and easily accessible.

Communications

Significant investment by companies such as Oxford Networks, Time Warner Cable, Verizon, AT&T, MCI, and Sprint have made the most advanced voice, data, and video-transmission services available throughout Maine. The State's communications infrastructure is highly advanced – both within its borders and for global connectivity.

One of the best testaments to the reliability and capacity of Maine's communications network is the presence of call centers in every region of the State, operated by respected companies such as L.L. Bean, MBNA, Seligman Data Corp., and Sitel Corp. These and many other communications-based businesses are thriving in Maine, and their success is dependent on an advanced, reliable communications system.

  •  Great Ratings: Maine's service and reliability ratings are among the best in the country, based on FCC service quality data.
  •  Advanced Service: Wireless, cable and fiber-optic technologies are available throughout Maine, offering all of the latest cutting-edge services. Maine was the first State to install a Statewide ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) fiber-optic-based network, allowing efficient digital transmission of voice, data, and full-motion video.
  •  Competitive Environment: Progressive public policy provides businesses and consumers with myriad choices for carriers and services with Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) operating in every large business market in the State.

Transportation

Maine voters showed their dedication to maintaining and improving the quality of their transportation infrastructure by passing a $63.4 million transportation bond in November 2003. Combined with federal and local funds, $300 million will be used to improve highways and bridges, railroads, airports, port and ferry facilities, trails, and other transit projects.

  •  More than 450 trucking firms provide service within the State of Maine. Maine does not engage in economic regulation of the trucking industry.
